Bent But Not Broken Don Cummings 9781942762614 Books Reviews

  • A lively read about men, their relationships both with others and with their most prized body part. An honest and intelligent memoir that self-examines so much more than just the groin. Clever prose and much heart. Highly recommend!
  • What a wonderful book. The author is both gifted and starkly honest. And funny. Cummings' writing made me laugh out loud, but also feel the frustration, anger and other emotions he describes going through while dealing with his condition. While this book is centered on Cummings' battle with Peyronie’s disease, it ultimately focuses on so much more. This is a book about love, growth, aging and finding the lemonade lining in what life throws your way.
  • Amazing read. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Would give it 6 stars.....
  • It is such a privilege to be let inside the internal life of another person, especially someone who can articulate their experiences with such clarity and precision. Being a straight woman, so many of the specifics were new to me, which was fascinating; and although this book is written about a very specific condition, I feel it would be an interesting read for anyone. While the specifics of our lives are different, the ups and downs of life are not, and Cummings reaches out with his strong voice in this easily relatable memoir, possessing the ability, I believe, to move any reader.
  • Awesome book and like hanging out with the author while he tells his story. A beautiful easy read. Very HONEST and he holds nothing back! Add even more stars if you have the challenge of Peyronies affecting your life!
  • I am a physician, this is a challenging and emotionally charged issue, Don’s adventure is uniquely his but thru his raw, personal and witty diatribe (his words) there is a gift of hope, healing and even a bit of a chuckle and joy...or blood rushing below!
  • This memoir of coping with Peyronie's disease (let's just say that the title is appropriate) is the type of thing that could easily be played for quick laughs. To his credit, Don Cummings mostly does not take the bait, although he does spend time in the grey zone between bitter humor and suppressed outrage, as anyone would when discussing the faults of the U.S. medical system.

Rather, he uses the disease as a pretext to explore his relationship with his husband, Adam, in at times great and searching detail. Which is a useful addition to the literature because I'm not aware of anyone else who has written, in nonfiction or fiction, about what a longterm gay relationship is or should be these days. There are coming-out and young-love novels galore, and a number of recent books featuring middle-aged guys who are single or widowed or otherwise unsuccessful at love (including last year's Pulitzer Prize winner, "Less"). But nothing for those of us who have managed to make it last.

Now there is. And it's good to have.
  • Cummings makes the most of his painful experiences with Peyronie's disease (which, as he informs us, is a condition, not a disease) to reflect on life, aging, love, sex, family in a way we all can relate to. His prose is fun and playful, making every page a treat. But it's his honesty that drives the book. It can be brutal and graphic, but not in a cringe way; it's an opportunity to search for truth to learn and grow -- for him and his readers. Also, as a straight guy, I found the book's exploration of gay sexuality and relationships insightful because of how much he opens up and lets us in. Definitely this is the kind of book you instantly miss the moment you finish.
