The Outdoor Toddler Activity Book 100+ Fun Early Learning Activities for Outside Play Krissy BonningGould 9781641523516 Books Reviews

  • A treasure trove for young kids and parents. The age-appropriate activities are color-coded by child development stages. Each activity is written like a recipe with materials, preparation time, and sequenced events which makes them easy. I like the outdoor emphasis. Kids who learn to play and learn outside will keep it up later. More nature, less electronic device dependence!
  • Great ideas for toddlers
  • What strikes you first about this book is how bright and colorful it is. VERY alive! To make it even easier to find the section you require, the outer edges of the book are color-coded - blue, green or coral. Outdoor play is important for our children not matter what their age so let's encourage them whilst they are young to get outside.

Written like a recipe book, each activity has a list of materials needed. Sometimes that might just be mud! There's a messiness scale for each activity ranging from 1-5 with 5 being the messiest. Prep time and activity time are also included along with the steps required, tips and caution if applicable. At the very top of the page there is "Skills Learned". The full key for all skills is provided on Page 9.

    Six chapters
Outdoor Fun (Intro) * Make it Messy! * Run, Jump, and Play! * Embrace Nature * Get Wet! * Outdoor Art

There are truly a GREAT variety of activities in this book. Some are edible like 'Digging for Worms'. Others, like the Waterfall Fence are innovative. Ever thought of creating a Sidewalk Chalk Pattern Quilt? You will find resources and index at the end. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. This review consists of my own thoughts and opinions. Thanks, Liz
  • Children and the Great Outdoors are a natural combination. Kids have endless curiosity, boundless energy, and unlimited imaginations. Playing outside is fun and educational, and it helps to burn excess energy. "The Outdoor Toddler Activity Book", from author Krissy Bonning-Gould, offers over 100 entertaining activities for toddler-aged (12 mos-36 mos) children. Bigger kids (and adults) will have a good time too! While fun is emphasized, safety is not overlooked. Activities are planned for all-year-round, including different types of weather and seasonal changes. Using materials on hand in the household and also resources readily available from Mother Nature, these fun learning outings keep costs to a minimum. I was personally quite pleased to see that mud pies are still popular. Childhood is a precious time of life, and memories of a happy, active childhood will make us smile for many years to come.

  • Loaded with fun, age appropriate activities that encourage problem solving, fine motor skills, sensory and visual spatial skills, as well as science and imagination. One thing I especially like is the creativeness of the projects! For instance, there is one where the parent/care giver freezes small plastic animals in a large plastic container and then ‘challenges’ the toddler to rescue the animals from the ice. The child will have at their disposal warm water, salt, and a wooden spoon. Under supervision they use problem solving skills to get to the animals. I don’t know about you but I was probably well into my 20s before I knew that salt will melt ice! The activities are sometimes a bit complicated but that just ensures that they will be someone actually engaging with them and that they are not just given something to get out of (mom’s) hair. I will be passing this on to my niece for her daycare!
I took advantage of an offer from the publisher to get this book free and with no obligations. This review is given by choice.
  • Kids love to play. They are active and constantly on the move. The trick is to channel this energy and excitement in creative and stimulating activities. The Outdoor Toddler Activity Book does just that. Here you have a primer for all things kids and how to help them learn while they are actively engaged in the world around them.

Krissy Bonning-Gould has drawn together a wonderful assortment of activities for different situations, places, climates, and even personality types. That’s right. Not all children like the same things. This collection of activities is so diverse there is something for everyone. What’s more, most of the things suggested require little or no preparation and use the kinds of things most people have in their homes.

If you have toddlers in your home, this is a must have book to get your creative juices flowing. You, like me, probably have trouble finding things for your kids to do. Unfortunately, the default strategy many parents use is to park them in front of a screen allowing them to be mindlessly entertained. We are constantly reminded that this is not healthy for our children or grandchildren. This book will help you formulate a way to move your children from screen time to fun time. It will also get them thinking rather than just senselessly staring at a device.

We all want what’s best for the children under our care. This book will help you achieve that goal.
  • The main job of a toddler is to play! Almost anything a toddler does they are learning and developing new skills. This activity book makes keeping them busy outside easy with wonderful ideas that require little to no prep time. No activity is longer than 20 minutes which is about the limit of a toddler’s attention span. This is not a summer time idea book – this has year-round, all weather, outdoor activities. They are broken down into 5 different themes ( Make it Messy; Run, Jump, and Play; Embrace Nature; Get Wet; and Outdoor Art). The book is laid out well with indicators of the skills used, materials needed, prep instructions, and the steps to the activity. So many sensory activities for toddlers and bigger kids too! Very well-done activity book. An excellent resource for child care providers, teachers, and parents.
