MOS 2016 Study Guide for Microsoft Excel Expert MOS Study Guide Paul McFedries 9780735699427 Books Reviews
- This was a good study guide. I just passed the test with a score of 850 (passing is 700). I used no other study materials. That means I missed 4 questions out of 26. On the way home I realized what I'd done wrong on one of them, and once home I investigated another one and found the answer; I had stupidly overlooked something. Kicking myself on both of those two questions; my score could have been about 923!
I used this book in 4 major steps
-- First, I walked through it cover to cover, doing every exercise even if it seemed easy and familiar. For topics I was not as familiar with, spent some time studying the feature in general, not just exactly what the bought taught.
-- Next, I reviewed, looking at each of my completed exercises except those that had been very easy and familiar.
-- Next, I reviewed again, this time skipping the exercises.
-- Finally, a quick review shortly before the test, spending significant time only with the topics I was least sure of.
With any of these study guides, you need to be aware that they don't teach everything you might be tested on. You're expected to use them as a starting point to deeply investigate the product's features.
Though I've been using Excel since 1994, the test covers a lot of ground and many of the topics were on areas that I rarely if ever use. If I had gone into the test unprepared, maybe a third of it would have been easy for me because those questions were on features I use a lot. Several more I could have figured out, but I doubt I would have passed. Even if you have a lot of experience with and knowledge about Excel, going into this test without studying a guide like this is a good way to fail the test.
The timing on the test was fairly tight; after marking two questions to come back to, I had about 10 minutes (out of 50) for those. When I'd done everything I could, there were about 3 minutes left. Try to work though the questions quickly, marking questions you aren't sure of and coming back to them rather than spending a lot of time on them. - I just had the Certiport exam. While there was a CUBE function question in the test, there was none in the practice tasks in this book. A typical flaw of this book is that author omitted many basic things like he thinks you're supposed to know. Like for the CUBE function,he went on and listed all CUBE functions but he doesn't tell you where to find the "connection", and didn't even give you an example or practice question in the book!
My tips to you is to spend $40 to purchase the GMetrix Exam Prep. Totally worth it! I'd say it's the Practice Tests and Skill Reviews helped me passed the exam. - The Good This book covers everything you need to know to take the expert exam.
The Bad You can't just use this book. You need to work the Gmetrix practice exams.
The Ugly I found a mistake that cost me a question on the exam. The section on GETPIVOTDATA should include instructions for turning on the generating pivot data syntax.
Recommendation I used the paperback copy and found it easier to work with if you get it spiral bound. - This is a great study guide. It does an excellent job at explaining the materials from multiple aspects. This book teaches you “how†to perform a certain task or operation but also teaches you “why†and “what†you’re doing.
- Good book, good price, hope it will help with my passing the test. Seems to cover all bases with some great info. Not too thick so it seems to be not overfilled with bulk and fluff - what I've read seems straight and to the point.
- Very good overview of test objectives. Will say you should get a practice tes to compliment this book. With both I passed the test.
- Covers all the topics in the exam, and learned a few new things also, but you must have some on-hand experience in Excel to take the test.
- For certification test prep, I would expect the Expert guide to provide screen captures, but it doesn’t. Lots of instruction but no way to know if you are looking at the right thing.
